Course Description

We’ll start these lessons by looking at basic parent-child relationships, the foundations for basic rigging in Maya. We’ll also go over constraints, another essential foundation for rigging. You will learn how to use various constraints, including point and orient constraints.

In these lessons, we will explore the basics of skinning and rigging in Maya 2022. In addition, we will look at the bone tools in the rigging menu, which is critical for correct defamation of the rig, and you will learn why it’s important that the orientation of the bones is consistent throughout the rig. Using the bone tools and constraints, we will create a simple foot rig, which we will then connect to Iconic Controls for Animation. Once the foot rig is completed, you will see how to use the skinning tools along with a set driven key. Finally, we’ll go over how to use Paint Weights for better deformation, completing a basic rig for an animated walk cycle.

What You'll Learn

  • Control objects using constraints, including point and orient constraints
  • Build basic parent-child relationships as a foundation for rigging in Maya 2022
  • Create bones for rigging using the bone tools in the rigging menu
  • Set controls using set driven keys and connect a foot rig to Iconic Controls for animation
  • Skin a character and refine deformation using Paint Weights
  • Complete a basic rig ready for an animated walk cycle

Key Takeaways

  • Parent-child relationships and constraints are the foundational concepts for basic rigging in Maya.
  • Consistent bone orientation throughout the rig is important for correct deformation.
  • The bone tools in the rigging menu are critical for correct deformation of the rig.
  • A simple foot rig built from bones and constraints can be connected to Iconic Controls for animation.
  • Paint Weights is used to achieve better deformation when completing a basic rig for an animated walk cycle.
