(bright music) Welcome to Methods to Motivate Employees. In these lessons, we'll look at how you can encourage extrinsic and intrinsic motivation from your employees. We'll also look at some traits you can look for in employees to best determine how to motivate them. Extrinsic motivation will vary depending on life factors such as family, work, security, social standing, and more. So even if a person isn't intrinsically motivated, knowing which form of extrinsic motivation is at play can help you encourage employees effectively. The four types of extrinsic motivation include external regulation, introjected regulation, identification-based regulation, and integrated regulation. You're subject to external regulation when you perform to satisfy an external demand or to earn an externally-imposed reward. One example might be a driver who strives to maintain a spotless driving record so they can keep their insurance premiums low. Although the behavior is careful and deliberate, it's regulated by outside forces. Any externally-managed conduct is perceived as controlled instead of autonomous. Introjected regulation is when someone resigns themself to the reason for doing something but doesn't fully accept it. Because introjected behavior is conducted under internal pressure to relieve guilt or anxiety, increase ego or pride, or maintain self-esteem or a sense of self-worth, this sort of regulation is viewed as regulated. Even though the person accepts the activity's purpose as needed and the intention is internal, the activity is not perceived as free choice. Identification-based regulation is a type of extrinsic drive that's less commanding. It refers to a person's conscious value of a goal and belief that the action is personally significant. They don't do it because it's expected of them. They do it because they feel personally motivated to do so. One example would be an employee who works extra diligently at a task because they want to be able to prove to themselves that they can do it and that they've internalized their own training. Because this is a personal goal, even though the behavior is driven by other factors, it's still self-contained. It's different if an employee works hard at a task because they believe they'll be a failure if they don't try their hardest, which is introjected regulation, or because their company is forcing them to do so, which would be external regulation. Integrated regulation is when a person has thoroughly absorbed the reason for action. When the cause has been investigated and determined to be compatible with their own values and requirements, integration occurs. The action takes on a life of its own after that. It's self-contained and independent of outside influences. Despite being extrinsic, integrated motivation is the best sort of extrinsic motivation since it shares many of the same characteristic as intrinsic motivation. Integrated regulation is the next best choice if intrinsic motivation isn't possible. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, falls on a spectrum of autonomy. This spectrum ranges from the least autonomous, which would be externally governed, to the most autonomous, which would be integrated. Competence, which is the ability to succeed, and relatedness, which is the sense of being connected to others, are two more factors that can contribute to integrated regulation. Employees who are encouraged to feel competent tend to procrastinate less. When they can relate their work to their own and the organization's over overall goals, they tend to be more invested in the quality of their work. Extrinsic motivation can be effective depending on how you use it. And external rewards may work in the short term when you want to keep individuals motivated on a task.
