HR can be viewed as the heart of an organization. The organ that brings together the brain and functions of the human capital to enable the success of the organization. Without a strong HR department, effective communication and the following of policies and procedures can be limited. This can place the organization at a disadvantage of not having consistent guidance and execution of what keeps it moving in a positive direction. As a human resources professional, you have a responsibility to the organization, yourself and the staff you support and serve. HR professionals also ensure employees are mentally, physically and emotionally nurtured and protected in their careers. In an organization, there are various departments that make up the total organization. When it comes to human resources or HR, this department has the potential to make or break an organization depending on the policies and procedures. Policies and procedures help the company consistently reach and achieve its mission and vision. Staff members are encouraged to follow and respect all policies and procedures within the company. Years ago, many companies were considering contracting or outsourcing HR departments. And while some companies did execute this transition there were many that realized a human resources department plays a strong role in the governance of an organization. Having an external partner to govern the internal functions can create many hassles and issues that prevent the organization from operating to its fullest potential. Human resources has the ability to establish and implement policies and procedures that will help support the organization's mission. It's easy to get lost in daily activities in an organization and not think about the company's mission and vision. However, this could also stand as a reason why the human resources department is such a valuable asset. Policies and procedures outline the organization's practices and processes concerning business operations including day-to -day operational matters, decision making and employment legislation. According to the Oxford dictionary, policy is a course or principle of action adopted or proposed by a government, party, business, or individual. In other words, a policy is the guidelines or standards to be put in place. A procedure, according to the Oxford dictionary, is an established or official way of doing something. In other words, a procedure is the specific actions it is going to take to remain within the ramifications of the policy. For example, an organization decides it needs a diversity and inclusion policy developed to grow its workforce. The policy would be diversity and inclusion and the procedure would be the specific actions or steps needed to ensure a diversity and inclusion policy is crafted and followed.
