We will also look at the different levels of Lean Six Sigma mastery. When a company is thinking about implementing Lean Six Sigma, the first question employees often ask is, "Why?" Lean Six Sigma may sound like a complex process that takes days, months, or even years to learn, but often, it's possible to learn and implement Lean Six Sigma with just a few hours of coaching. While intimidating to some, Lean Six Sigma is actually quite straightforward. The process involves implementing simple steps that will allow any company to improve quality, remove waste, and deliver products using innovative cost saving methods. So who uses the Lean Six Sigma method? It's used by the CDC to ensure that vaccines are manufactured using the highest quality standards. Air traffic controllers use Lean Six Sigma to ensure that planes are taking off at the right time. Railroads make use of Lean Six Sigma to make sure that gas, coal, lumber, and steel are delivered on time and to the correct locations. Organizations can calculate the Lean Six Sigma process by using the following formula. Don't be overwhelmed by the formula. It simply states that continuous improvements are being made and that a team has agreed to improve a process by 100%. When initiating Lean Six Sigma, you have to ask if there's a better way to complete the work. A simple representation of using the method would be putting gas into a car. When you realize you need gas, you're looking at the fuel indicator on the vehicle's dashboard. When you identify that the indicator shows your fuel is low, you locate the nearest gas station. Once you pull the car up to a fuel pump, you have to open the gas tank. You then have to select the correct grade of gasoline. Are you going to use regular, premium, or diesel? You then have to the correct type of gas into the fuel tank, but this can only take place after you've opened the gas flap, unscrewed the gas cap on the vehicle, and placed the nozzle into the fuel tank. While this process seems intuitive, if done correctly, you're completing a simple Lean Six Sigma process. You're accomplishing your goal with the least amount of steps possible, and those steps are broken down into simple tasks. Though easily completed, when using Lean Six Sigma, challenges often take place. Challenges can be in the areas of waste removal, lack of knowledge, lack of support, poor execution, or limited access to data. If you can overcome these issues, the Lean Six Sigma process should be easy.
