Hello, my name is John Varon, and in these lessons you will learn about database security. In this lesson, I will show you about different types of security. Security comes in many forms and shapes, both in the digital world and in the real physical world. But all forms of security usually fall into three broad categories. The first category is authentication. Authentication is about identification. It is proving that you are who you say you are. In the real world, this is often accomplished by showing an ID card of some sort, usually one with your photo so it can be matched against your face. In the digital world, this is usually more complicated. The most common way is to create an account on a program or website with a username and password, which can be used to identify you in the future. Other systems may use biometric measures, such as fingerprints or facial recognition. Authorization is the second category. This step often comes right after or in conjunction with authentication. Once you prove who you are, the authorization step is to see if you have access to the thing you're trying to access. In software or websites, this is often done by checking a master list of users and what they have access to. This list would be maintained by an administrator user. It can also be done through the use of roles, where each user is placed into a small set of roles, and an authorization at various levels would be given to each role. Secrecy is the final category. Secrecy refers to keeping certain information out of the hands of people that should not have it. One way to achieve secrecy is to try to hide it, such as by putting a file into a folder whose name doesn't give any hints about what's in it, or naming the file something that isn't suspicious. This form of secrecy is called secrecy through obscurity and is widely recognized as not being very effective. No matter how well something is hidden, someone will eventually find it. A much more effective method of keeping a secret is through encryption. Encryption is a mathematical algorithm which changes data into another form, and is extremely difficult or impossible to change back without knowing something like a password. The idea behind encryption is that you could outright hand the encrypted information to anyone and still be confident that they would not be able to access the secret data. Obscurity is not necessary at all. When it comes to database applications like Microsoft Access 2021, all three of these categories are generally implemented. Thanks for watching.
