Hello, my name is Deanna and in these lessons you will learn how to apply design themes and backgrounds. Add transitions and animations, add smart art diagrams to engage the audience insert footers, slide numbers and speaker notes. In this lesson I will show you how to apply design themes and backgrounds to slides. PowerPoint design themes are predesigned sets of color, fonts and visuals that can be applied to your slides. I am going to add a title so I have a title added to get us started. The next thing I'm going to do is add a few new slides, all with different layouts. So to add a new slide, I'm going to go to home new slide, look at my layout and the first one that I'm going to add is title and content. As you'll see in a moment, themes can look different depending on the slide layout, which is why we have four different slide layouts, four different layouts that we will look at. Let's go to Design on the menu bar. When I click on that you will see themes and variants as well as some other things like background. If we click the More button here, the down arrow for themes, we can select one of these themes. I will just pick one at random here. I will pick integral and you can see the changes that it automatically made for us. As I said before, depending on the slide layout, when you apply the theme, the slide will look different. So if I click on slide two, all I'm seeing is this little bit of blue formatting. Same thing for slide three, but for my section header it gave me the same design as it did with the title slide. Let's look at variance now. So I moved over from themes over to variants and now we can basically change the coloring. Pick one to change the coloring. It changed the pattern slightly. Let's try another theme. Now on this one it has changed the background to all of them to be about the same. So I want you to see that that depending on the slide layout and the theme, you're going to see different things. Not only are you going to see different background elements, you're also going to see potentially title moved over to the right hand side with this theme that we chose. So the theme that you choose doesn't just change color or add design, it also changes the format of the text and even sometimes the placement. So also under this design tab we have this background button. We can use the background icon to change just the background of a slide or all of them at once. You can select a solid color or even insert a picture that you already have saved on your computer. So if I click background, I can click Solid Fill and pick a color. And let's pick something very different to stand out. We'll pick red. Notice it only changed the background of the first one. However, if I go back to background and click apply to all, it changes all of them. Again, if I go to background, if I had a picture saved to my computer that I wanted it to be the background, I could select picture from file. But I'm going to change that fill one more time here to something a little easier on the eye and then again apply to all.
