(upbeat music) Innovation is a key contributor to business success in the 21st century. It requires collaboration, and leaders who can create a team culture that fosters creativity and forward thinking. In these lessons, we will explore the demands of the 21st century workplace, including the importance and value of collaboration. You'll also learn how team cultures are created and sustained, and the role you as a leader play in creating this culture. Although innovation has always been a key contributor to business success, the business environment of the 21st century bring new challenges. To sustain success, businesses must continually scan the horizon for risks and opportunities. Then identify and evaluate them. Leaders need to act quickly, effectively and efficiently to make the necessary changes to maintain their company's competitive edge. Whether the goal is to improve existing business processes, services or products, creating new ones, or making major shifts in direction, staying competitive often requires taking an entirely new approach, which necessitates some new ways of thinking. But why are innovation and creativity so important in the 21st century? The problems facing businesses and the nature of decision making are more complex than ever before. According to Forbes, some of the modern challenges companies need to address are rethinking its role in today's society. Shifting revenue-generating ideas and technologies. Consumers' needs continually changing. And redefining the workplace. In the past, businesses traditionally dealt with complicated problems that could be solved through the systematic application of rules-based approaches. Today, the information that decision makers sort through is constantly expanding and critical analysis is essential to choosing the most credible and relevant information. Competition is also greater than ever before. Globalization has increased competition in part by making many more products and services available to consumers who may now base their buying decisions on price instead of brand loyalty. Competitive products and services can appear unexpectedly, and so can competitors. To maintain success, businesses must proactively identify opportunities to improve products or create a new market niche, and do so quickly, often without knowing what the competition is doing. Change, especially radical change may be perceived as a major threat, stifling innovation and creativity. What make a business successful can also lead to its downfall. Successful businesses have strong incentives to continue doing what's already made them successful. Prolonged success can lead to a fear of failure and that fear can reduce an organization's tolerance of risk. Solutions to problems often entail simply doing more of the same instead of proactively recognizing the need for radical change through innovation. Relatively new businesses can be risk-averse too. If they're convinced that their idea is innovative, they may become blind to opportunities that additional innovation could bring. Increased competition, globalization, future uncertainty and the speed of change all contribute to the need for innovation and creativity in the 21st century workplace.
