How can you determine sales growth and the numbers you should target? Here, we'll examine these concepts from basic marketing and sales standpoints. Then, look at determining and identifying growth and the sales tools you can use to keep track of your own numbers. To start your process of determining new sales opportunities, you should first determine your target goals. Once targets are identified, marketing starts off the process by using the four Ps as a framework. These four Ps are product, which is what the company sells. Price, which is based on historical data and involves competitive intelligence, market conditions, customer needs, and more. Place, which is how and where the products are sold, delivered, and supported. Place also involves direct sales, indirect sales, distributors, and wholesalers. And promotion, which is all about how the product is advertised, promoted ,and positioned in regard to quality and price within the market. Promotions include print media, internet ads, handouts, and coupons. The four Ps form the basis of how customers are approached, and how a company presents its value proposition to the market resulting in revenue, profit margin, and growth projections. The plans made based on the four Ps are living documents, and should be consistently reviewed throughout the year to determine new growth opportunities, introduce new products, make adjustments based on market conditions, and ensure that any and all plans are meeting corporate and sales objectives. One key component to any marketing effort is including relevant departments within the organization like finance, delivery, customer support, and sales to ensure that plans are realistic. However, upper management usually has the last say on projections.
