Course Description

In these lessons you will learn about using terrain systems. We will explore how to shape terrain, adding layered textures and populating the terrain with trees using a paint-on surface toolset. By the end of these lessons, you will be able to create world levels for all your characters and objects to interact with.

These lessons will cover how to use the terrain tools to sculpt a large environment with hills, mountains, and valleys using different brush types to add detail. We’ll go over how to download terrain texture assets and use them to paint ground and grass layers. You will also learn how to create a tree from scratch using Unity’s procedural tree tools to add branches and leaves. Then you’ll use the tree you created to paint groups of trees of varying sizes across areas of your terrain. Next, you’ll learn how to clear an area in the center of the terrain in order to build an arena for players and NPCs to interact. You’ll use the arena floor as an AI Navmesh area, create walls around the perimeter, and then scatter additional walls inside the arena so the player and NPCs will have to navigate around them. Finally, you’ll learn how to add textures will to the walls to enhance the visual quality of the environment.

What You'll Learn

  • Sculpt terrain into hills, mountains, and valleys using different brush types to add detail
  • Import and paint layered ground and grass textures onto the terrain surface
  • Create a procedural tree from scratch using Unity's tree tools to add branches and leaves
  • Paint groups of trees of varying sizes across areas of the landscape using brush tools
  • Build an arena by clearing the terrain center, setting an AI Navmesh floor, and adding perimeter and interior walls
  • Add textures to the arena walls to enhance the visual quality of the environment

Key Takeaways

  • Unity's terrain system lets you shape a large environment and populate it with trees using a paint-on surface toolset.
  • Terrain texture assets can be downloaded and used to paint layered ground and grass surfaces.
  • Unity's procedural tree tools let you build a tree from scratch and then paint groups of it at varying sizes across the terrain.
  • An arena cleared in the center of the terrain can serve as an AI Navmesh area enclosed by perimeter and scattered interior walls for player and NPC navigation.
  • Completing these lessons enables you to create world levels for characters and objects to interact with.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will I be able to do after completing this course?

By the end of these lessons you will be able to create world levels for all your characters and objects to interact with, including sculpting terrain, painting layered textures, creating procedural trees, and building an arena.

What topics do the lessons cover?

The lessons cover blocking out the environment, adding textures and trees, and creating the arena, including using terrain tools to sculpt hills, mountains, and valleys, painting ground and grass layers, creating and painting procedural trees, and building an arena with an AI Navmesh floor and textured walls.

How are trees created and placed in this course?

You learn to create a tree from scratch using Unity's procedural tree tools to add branches and leaves, then use that tree to paint groups of trees of varying sizes across areas of your terrain.

What skills does this course focus on?

The course focuses on painting, tree diagrams, and ZBrush, applied to 3D level design in Unity.
