You. In this lesson we will review how to insert advanced characters and objects in Outlook. Special text characters are normal characters that don't appear on a standard keyboard, but once inserted, they look the same. In the Microsoft applications such as Outlook, you can add those to be able to enhance your email communication. In this lesson we'll look at ways in which you can insert these special characters and objects using the Insert Options feature and by using your keyboard. To begin, you'll open Outlook and you'll open a new email window if you were beginning to create a message. To access the options with your insertion point in the body of the email message, you will click on the Insert tab on the ribbon, and in the Symbols group you'll click on the Symbols button and choose the option More Symbols. You'll select the tab titled Special Characters. And here is where you can find various symbols and objects that are considered special characters that you can select and insert into your email message. To insert any of these you have one or two options to choose from. You can select the character and then click the Insert button to insert it into the body of your email message. Or you can use the keyboard shortcuts that are assigned for those particular symbols. So you see here there are certain ones that have keyboard shortcut. You can use any of those to enter those, or again select it and click Insert to add it. You also have the option to do shortcut keyboard to customize keyboard shortcuts for any symbols that don't currently have a keyboard shortcut already assigned to it. So if it's a symbol that you use pretty frequently and it does not have a keyboard shortcut, you can create one. So here you would specify the symbol that you would choose to apply the keyboard shortcut to and then you would assign a keyboard shortcut and then click Assign to add it to the list of options for entering that symbol or character or object. So we're going to enter the N dash by selecting it here and then clicking the Insert option. And as you can see where our insertion point was here in the body of the email message, that symbol has been inserted. Another option is to use the Autocorrect button. And here we have some symbols or objects that have already been assigned an Autocorrect feature. With the Autocorrect feature, it'll recognize certain things that you'll type using your keyboard and when you type those, it will enter the symbol or object that's assigned to those keyboard items. So here is a list of some already assigned keyboard commands. So when you type the information in the first column, it'll generate and create the symbol that's in the second column. So you can actually enter these special characters or objects from here by selecting it and then clicking OK. Or you can type in the keyboard options that are listed here to enter those. So we're going to walk through really quick how to do that by entering a couple of symbols using our keyboard. So we want to enter an arrow. So you'll put two dashes and the arrow symbol, and if you notice I typed those symbols, it automatically created that arrow. Do the same thing for the copyright symbol, typing two parentheses with the C in the center. As soon as I type that list of keyboard characters, it generated that symbol. We'll have a few more we're going to do that creates the euro sign. We're going to do parentheses with an R in it to do the registered trademark sign and then TM in parentheses to do trademark sign. And the last one my favorite that I use quite frequently, the smiley face. So you can either use the special characters that are available using the symbol button to include or add special characters or symbols. You can use the autocorrect list to identify the keyboard shortcuts that have been assigned to enter certain characters or symbols. Either option you choose gives you the opportunity to use symbol or characters that are not currently on your keyboard, but can be useful in communicating the message that you're planning to deliver in your email communication. Stay tuned for the next lesson where I will show you how to customize settings, properties and options in Outlook. Thanks for watching.
