Rotary drilling equipment. There are many types and designs of drilling equipment with most drilling equipment capable of switching or combining different drilling technologies as necessary. Drilling equipment can be described according to the power source, the pipe used, the height of the winch, position of the winch or the rotation method. Based on the power source, there are mechanical, electric, hydraulic, pneumatic and steam types of equipment. Mechanical rigs use torque converters, clutches and transmissions driven by its engines. For electric equipment the main elements of the machinery are powered by electric motors. With hydraulics, the drilling equipment uses mainly hydraulic energy. Pneumatic equipment refers to the drilling rig being powered by pressurized air. Some drilling rigs use steam engines and pumps, though, these became obsolete after the mid 20th century. Different types of pipes may be used. The conventional method uses metal or plastic drilling pipes of different types and flexible tubing or coil tubing uses a large reel of flexible tubing at a bottom motor. When categorized by the height of the winch drilling equipment is differentiated by the number of connected pipes that are capable of simultaneously being removed and stored in the tower when the drill string is needed outside the hole. Normally this is done when a WIC is changed or when making well records. The equipment can be categorized as simple, double, triple or tetra. For simple equipment you can take only one drill tube at a time. For double, you can take out to connect the drill pipes called a pair of two pipes. For triple you can take out three connected drill pipes. The set of tubes is called a couple or stand. Finally, for tetra, you can take four connected drill pipes. Equipment is also categorized based on whether a rotary table or top drive is used as the rotation method. When a rotary table is used, rotation is achieved by turning a square or hexagonal pipe called a quadrant or Kelly with a rotary table on the drilling floor. When using a top drive, rotation and circulation are carried out at the top of the drill string using a motor that travels on rails vertically inside the winch. Based on the position of the winch conventional is when the tower or winch is vertical and slanting is when the winch is tilted at a fixed or variable angle to facilitate directional drilling.
