Course Description

In this module, you will learn all the basics of creating a unique and informative drawing document. These 2D representations of 3D files can be used as sales collateral, production documents, or simple brainstorming tools. You will begin by exploring the general interface of drawings as well as how 3D files are expressed within once loading into the file. From there, you will generate multiple types of views of those 3D files from orthographic projections, to section views, exploded views, and detail call-outs. Next, you will learn how to create tables in drawings that intelligently auto populate with imbedded information in parts and assemblies.

Once the basic methods of creating drawings are taught, you will move onto ways of customizing the design of drawings to meet your own personal style or your company’s design standards. This includes creating symbols, setting fonts, setting line type, organizing the layout of the page, setting Smart Dimension drafting protocol, and importing imagery. All of this will help you create drawing templates to capture your design preferences with each new document you create. Finally, by incorporating file properties as part of your templates, you can auto populate drawings with embedded design information with each new part or assembly you import, saving time and ensuring consistent results.

What You'll Learn

  • Navigate the general layout and uses of SolidWorks drawing documents
  • Import 3D files into 2D drawings and represent them in views
  • Generate and edit common view types including orthographic projections, section views, exploded views, and detail call-outs
  • Create and edit tables, including a Bill of Materials, that auto-populate with embedded part and assembly information
  • Customize drawing style with symbols, fonts, line types, page layout, Smart Dimension protocol, and imported imagery
  • Create drawing templates and use Smart Properties to auto-populate drawings with embedded design information

Key Takeaways

  • Drawings are 2D representations of 3D files that can serve as sales collateral, production documents, or brainstorming tools.
  • Tables in drawings can intelligently auto-populate with information embedded in parts and assemblies.
  • Drawing templates capture your design preferences so they are applied with each new document you create.
  • Incorporating file properties into templates lets drawings auto-populate with embedded design information when a new part or assembly is imported, saving time and ensuring consistent results.
  • Drawing design can be customized to match your personal style or your company's design standards.
