Course Description

Solidworks is a 3D modeling and design program that uses dimension and relationship driven design features to build complex models. The program encourages designs that are thought-out and based on clearly defined parameters that the user sets to ensure that the final result meets their needs. It can accommodate the design and engineering challenges posed in a multitude of different fields such as infrastructure, part modeling, machinery, manufacturing, commercial products, and many others.

By the end of the course, you will be able to comfortably create and manipulate these 2D drawings (or sketches) and build those sketches into models that are both defined by dimensions as well as relationships so that if a relationship changes, the model updates.

The program begins with 2D sketching. After mastering that, the program will move you to turning those 2D sketches into 3D models that can respond intelligently to any changes you wish to make. You can be confident that, regardless of how your design concept evolves, the program will be able to express your vision with ease.

What You'll Learn

  • Understand what parametric modeling is and why it is a useful design methodology
  • Use sketches to visualize design concepts in 2D
  • Set dimensions and relationships in sketches to capture design intent
  • Translate 2D sketches into 3D models that respond to changes
  • Organize 3D models into configurations that explore variations on a concept
  • Apply reference geometry, curves, and modeling tools such as extruded, revolved, swept, and lofted boss features

Key Takeaways

  • SolidWorks is a 3D modeling and design program that uses dimension- and relationship-driven design features to build complex models.
  • The program encourages designs that are thought-out and based on clearly defined parameters that the user sets so the final result meets their needs.
  • SolidWorks can accommodate design and engineering challenges in fields such as infrastructure, part modeling, machinery, manufacturing, and commercial products.
  • The course begins with 2D sketching and then moves to turning those sketches into 3D models that respond intelligently to changes.
  • Because models are defined by both dimensions and relationships, the model updates when a relationship changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this course for?

This is a beginner course in SolidWorks 2022, starting with what SolidWorks is and how it is used and progressing from 2D sketching to building 3D models.

What will I be able to do by the end of the course?

By the end of the course you will be able to comfortably create and manipulate 2D drawings (sketches) and build those sketches into models that are defined by both dimensions and relationships, so that when a relationship changes, the model updates.

What topics does the course cover?

The course covers introduction to SolidWorks and its uses, viewing the model, planes, creating and defining sketches with smart dimensions and relationships, sketch tools and entities, 3D sketching, modifying and fixing sketches, equations and global variables, reference geometry, curves (projected, composite, helix and spiral), and turning sketches into 3D models with extruded, revolved, swept, and lofted boss features.

What skills does this course help build?

It supports skills including solid modeling, CAD programs, SolidWorks (CAD), and SolidWorks certification.

How does the course progress?

The program begins with 2D sketching, and after mastering that it moves you to turning those 2D sketches into 3D models that can respond intelligently to changes you make.
