Hello, welcome to advanced Visio. In this lesson, we're going to create a type of diagram called a pivot diagram. Now, it can be based on data in Excel, and I want to show you an example of what the data set might look like. Here I have a spreadsheet that, normally, I create pivot tables in Excel from. Notice how it has column headings up in row one, and then no entire blank rows. When you build a pivot diagram, basically what you're doing is taking pivot table data and creating a diagram out of it in Visio. Now, I've seen what this data looks like. Also notice it's on the sales total sheet inside of Excel. I'm now gonna jump back into Visio. Now, there is a template that you can actually use to create one of these pivot diagrams. I'm gonna go to File and New and search for it. It starts with the word pivot. So if I just type in pivot and then do a search, we'll notice that the pivot diagram will come available for me to use. Again, you can remember if you're going to use it more than once, you can pin it. Now, the the second step after I create the drawing is to select the data that my pivot diagram will be based on. Notice the different file types that you can bring in: Excel, Access, SharePoint, SQL, and even ODBC data sources. So you've got a pretty wide variety. We're gonna click on Next because I'm going to be connecting to that Excel spreadsheet. I need to browse to where it's located. And again, this could be on a network or locally. I'm going to find it. And then the next step is to select the sheet. Now, it's already selected the sheet for me, but notice right here, I could select custom ranges or I could come in and look through multiple sheets. My workbook only has one. Also notice here, it's letting me know does my first row contain column headings? And row one does. So then we're gonna click on Next again. Now, it's going to ask me what columns and rows in my data source should I use? In this case, it's automatically selecting all columns, but down here on the bottom, notice it would allow me to go through my data set and actually select which columns I wanted to bring in. All the check marks means these are the column headers that I'm bringing over and examples of the data, and because it's already set up to be made into pivot table data, it's very easy for me to see the data in here is already correctly selected for me. So all columns and all data are perfect. I'm going to click on Next again. And once it's ready, I'm going to click on Finish. This is actually going to open up again for me to begin building my pivot diagram. A few things to notice: over here on the left, I have my pivot diagram task bar that's opened up and my shapes pane is still open behind it. Notice if I come right here and click on this restore button, is sizes it down and I can see my normal Visio shapes task pane below. But again, due to the fact that we're building so much in our current pivot diagram, we're going to keep this open and keep the shapes pane behind it. Also, I'm going to have a new ribbon up here at the top called the pivot diagram ribbon. This is all about helping me to build my pivot diagram, based on my Excel data. Thanks so much for watching. In the next lesson, we're actually going to build out and customize our pivot diagram. Stay tuned.
