(bright upbeat music) Welcome to essential professional characteristics. Becoming an outstanding professional, can feel like a puzzle. Sometimes, you're still discovering all the right pieces. Other times, you recognize the right pieces but don't know how they fit to together. In these lessons, we'll address the characteristics of a true professional, and how you can incorporate them into your work life. One of the most important professional characteristics is integrity. Having integrity means staying true to your values and acting honorably every day. Acting with integrity, can make you feel better about your work and yourself. It can also establish you as someone who can be trusted to make the right choice. Integrity is not something that shifts with the circumstances. It should be upheld in all workplace interactions and situations. Whether you're talking to your teammates or boss. A worker with a true sense of integrity will do what they think is right, not what is most expedient or beneficial to them. Here are a few ways you can act with integrity. Be honest, even when it's difficult. Follow the company mission statement. Follow company rules and policies. Be trustworthy about company business, and keep it confidential. Avoid risky shortcuts. And don't gossip about coworkers, or say negative things about the company. Here's an example of employees acting with and without integrity. Ajay and Liz are both office workers at the same technology company. They've both been working there for a few years, but these two coworkers approach their work in very different ways. Let's examine how each of them do, or do not embody the professional characteristic of integrity. It's Saturday night and Liz and Ajay are out for dinner with some friends. Even though it's the weekend, the topic of work comes up. Everyone wants to know what new projects their company is working on. These projects are confidential, and employees are not supposed to talk about them. Ajay politely declines telling his friends any information. He reminds the group that his company has a strict confidentiality policy but that doesn't stop Liz. She excitedly begins to explain the details of her new work project, eager to hear how her friends will react. In this situation Ajay acted with integrity, while Liz did not. Ajay respected his workplace's policies and privacy. Liz potentially leaked information that could damage the company. Integrity comes down to both respecting yourself, and your job. The more you believe in the importance of your work, the more natural it will feel to maintain your sense of professional integrity.
