(bright music) In the following lessons, we'll explore how to put your engagement plans into action. We'll start by discussing how and why emotional engagement works. You'll also learn to promote strong interpersonal relationships and set and manage expectations. What differentiates job satisfaction from emotional engagement is that emotional engagement focuses on the individual experiences employees have at work and what influences these experiences. Instead of measuring how satisfied an employee is at work, emotional engagement seeks to understand how the employee feels about the complete work experience. According to Mark Sawyer, the CEO and co-founder of Bonfire, a workplace culture platform, any strategy for improving emotional engagement should focus on five emotions. One, trust, two, altruism. Three, excitement, four, belonging and five, achievement. Trust is essential to developing solid and meaningful relationships with others. When employees trust managers, they believe those managers have their best interests in mind. That allows for positive relationships with management to grow, which increases positive feelings about the organization. Trust can be strengthened by increasing transparency and accountability. Altruism is the willingness to help others based on a sense of duty rather than personal gain. Trust and altruism are often linked. When employees develop trust in their company and their managers, they're more likely to behave in ways that help the organization and those in it. Excitement can play a large role in emotional engagement. When employees are excited about their jobs, positive results follow, such as reduced absenteeism and turnover and increased productivity. Increasing employee excitement involves many strategies including ensuring that employees are in positions that match their experience and interests, mentoring, and coaching employees and ensuring that they have what they need to excel. Belonging is a basic human emotional need. Providing employees with the opportunity to interact with others that they trust, can lead to meaningful relationships with others in the organization. Employees that have a good rapport with their coworkers are more likely to have positive emotions about their organization. Achievement contributes to emotional fulfillment especially in the workplace. Employees need to feel that their work matters and is respected. When employees are recognized for their hard work and achievements, they are more likely to be emotionally engaged. By focusing efforts on these five emotions, companies can create an emotionally engaged environment for their employees to thrive.
