(upbeat music) Let's go over the various techniques you can use to create a high-performance work culture, including cultivating healthy stress, encouraging positivity, and celebrating good performance. There's good stress and then there's bad stress. Bad stress can keep you up at night or lead to anxiety and health issues. But good stress, otherwise known as eustress, is caused by wanting to achieve something. It encourages emotional, psychological, and physical growth. If a runner wants to take 10 seconds off their time, they might do extra hill work to increase their speed. This is good stress because the runner caused the situation to occur. Bad stress is usually the result of someone else creating a situation that you're pulled into. A person's actions and reactions to bad stress are usually brought on by avoiding the issue. An example of good stress in the workplace would be an employee working towards a promotion. Say Carla hears of an open position and takes steps to be considered for it. She reviews the job requirements and education level. Carla knows she needs to complete her degree if she wants to be a viable candidate, so she enrolls at the local college. When other employees noted there were days where she looked tired, Carla admitted that going for this promotion was one of the best things she ever did because she challenged herself and learned what she was capable of. A coach can cultivate positive stress in the workplace by creating friendly competitions between employees being coached and their managers to put all employees on a level playing field. This can help show employees that their managers can still face the same challenges that they do. An example might be to set a challenge to make a sale or bring in a new client by the end of the week. If each member of the sales team works towards this goal alongside their manager, they can share the experience, motivate each other and build camaraderie. Just make sure that the goal you set is realistic. Tight deadlines, unreasonable amounts of work and too much pressure may cause your employees to experience negative stress.
