(upbeat music) What does emotional intelligence, or lack of emotional intelligence affect your performance in the workplace? Let's explore a few case studies that demonstrate how emotional intelligence can impact success. To survive in a time of crisis, you can narrow your checklist to two words, responsibility, and grace. From a logical standpoint, all you need to ask yourself is, what do I need to do to be responsible in this situation? It may be gathering data, having a conversation, or setting realistic expectations. The graceful half of the equation, is how we manage relationships in challenging times. How do our emotions influence the way we behave towards others and ourselves? We can have all the intellectual firepower in the world but a lack of social awareness and empathy, will produce negative results. Depending on what book, academic paper, or a program you're looking at, you'll get a different definition of emotional intelligence. But at its core, emotional intelligence, which is also known as emotional quotient or EQ, is the ability to observe, feel, control and use your emotions. Emotional intelligence is composed of four important core abilities. Self-awareness, your ability to recognize your own emotions strengths, and weaknesses. Self-management, your ability to control your impulsive responses, and manage your emotions and reactions. Social awareness, your ability to empathize with others, understand their thoughts, feelings, and needs. And to recognize the power dynamics within a group. And a relationship management, your ability to communicate effectively, manage conflicts and work in a team environment. When experiencing stress, people with low emotional intelligence will immediately gravitate towards a victim mentality and become stuck there because they lack adaptability. People with high emotional intelligence, can acknowledge their situations without wallowing in it. These people have a chance to move forward in times of uncertainty, because they're flexible and can adapt to change. In times of crisis, our self-awareness is the first thing to go. As feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, and frustration built, a coping mechanism, such as emotional intelligence is a survival skill you can learn and use to manage your emotions in relationships. Learning and mastering the core abilities of emotional intelligence, will increase your ability to manage your emotions, adapt to change, and work well with others in times of crisis. These skills will not only help you survive, but will ensure that you will succeed where others fail.
