AI Ethics and Accountability

This course on AI Ethics and Accountability will provide a thorough overview of ethical considerations and principles around accountability in AI systems. You will learn about principles that apply only to AI systems, like explainability, as well as broader principles, like the principle of equal access to technology, services, and opportunities. You will learn about the intersection of ethical AI and human rights, governance, and the legal system.

The technology of AI has the potential to provide significant benefits, but it also has the potential to cause significant harm. Accountability is a critical piece of AI ethics, and it is relevant in all stages of the lifecycle of an AI system, including during design, after deployment, and when any harm occurs because of the system. You will learn how AI systems can be assessed in terms of transparency, explainability, and fairness, and current regulations around privacy, safety, and security in artificial intelligence.

You will learn about the principle of human control of technology, and how it intersects with AI system development. You will also see how the responsibility of designers is linked to the governance of AI systems and multistakeholder collaboration to gain feedback and hear concerns about the system design and its impact on various stakeholder groups.

Finally, you will learn the ways machine learning provides different ethical challenges and the governance landscape around IT and AI. You will also work through case studies focusing on issues in identity and discrimination, offensive content, and legal implications.
