In these lessons, you'll be introduced to the act and why it's important for human resources professionals to understand how it impacts the employer-employee relationship. You'll also discover the specific provisions within Title VII and how they are written to prohibit employment discrimination based on certain factors. Title VII is part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The purpose of this portion of the Civil Rights Act is intended to ensure that employers only consider someone's abilities, education and other work-related skills for employment. Last year, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or EEOC, resolved 138 lawsuits. 21 of those included allegations of discrimination based on race or national origin, 26 systemic lawsuits in which company policies or practices are found to be discriminatory and more than 340 systemic investigations. Title VII affects all aspects of a business. It's vital to understand the laws that affect hiring, termination and an employee's treatment in the workplace.
