Welcome to the lesson on arrays and matrices in MATLAB. Once again, MATLAB is an abbreviation for matrix laboratory. All structures in MATLAB are treated as multidimensional arrays, regardless of the data type being used because of this it's important to know how to create matrices and arrays of your own. In short, a matrix is just a multidimensional array. So creating a arrays and matrices in MATLAB is actually a pretty simple and straightforward task. So to create an array called X, you just type X is equal to and you use square brackets to enclose it and you type your values. So if I wanted a array that was containing values five through eight, I would type X equals open square bracket 5, 6, 7, 8, and that creates the array. So in MATLAB, you have multiple options for creating arrays. You can separate your elements with commas or spaces. And so in this first example I use commas to separate the elements in this next example, I'll use spaces. So I'll type 5, 6, 7, and eight. And once again, as you can see they created in array that contains the same values. Another way to create an array in MATLAB is by using shorthand or ranges. So this is particularly useful if the elements that you want in your array or matrix are consecutive values. So in this case, what we've been doing so far is creating arrays with values five through eight. And so another way to do this is by using the colon in order to indicate that you wanna range. And so you start with the first number in the range which is five, and then you use a colon and you put the last number in the range, which is eight. And that allows you to create an array that has values five through eight. So these are three different ways of creating the same type of array. The important thing to note here is that regardless of the method that's used your elements have to be separated by some symbol. So it'll either it be commas spaces or a colon to indicate that you want every value in the range. So when creating matrices you need to indicate multiple rows or columns. And so the way to do that is once again all matrices arrays require the square brackets. And for instance, if I want to create an array that is three by three and each row has the values. One, two, and three I will first create the values for the first row. So in this case, I'm going to use the shorthand which is just one, colon three and then I'll use the semicolon to indicate that I want values on a new row. And then I'll type one, colon three again and then use another semicolon to indicate that I want a third row and I'll do one colon three, one final time and then close it with the closing square bracket. And so what you see here is now I have a three by three matrix and each row contains the values one, two, and three. This concludes this lesson. Thank you.
