Hello, welcome to Knowledge City's course in Adobe Photoshop. My name is Jeff Dreilowitz, and today I will be teaching you how to set up a new document and how to navigate the preset details. Let's get to it. To start off with, at the top left side of your screen, you'll see the New File button, the blue one up here. When I click on that, the New Document screen pops up. Starting over on the right side of our screen, we've got our preset details. I'm going to give it a name. Let's call that Practice. Looking down beneath that, we've got our width and our height. You can change the dimensions you're going to work with. I'm going to work with inches. Pixels are great for if you're creating something like, say, a YouTube banner or something for Facebook. I'm just going to keep it simple right now and make a 7 -inch by 10 -inch document. We've got an orientation, which is portrait or landscape. And for resolution, I'm going to make that 300. That's generally the industry standard for print. And when someone mentions pixels per inch, that is what you're seeing right here. That is 300 pixels per square inch on your screen. Now looking down at our color modes, we've got bitmap, grayscale, RGB, CMYK, and lab color. CMYK is for print, RGB is for screens. RGB stands for red, green, and blue, and CMYK is cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. We've got our bit depth here, and that is the number of bits used to define each pixel. The greater the bit depth, the greater the number of tones that can be represented within your document. I'll go with 16 for now. We've got our background content. You can decide whether you want your background to be white, black, have a background color of your choosing, transparent, or custom, say maybe a gradient. I'll keep it basic, stick with white. Moving down to our advanced options, we have got a color profile. There are a lot to choose from. Generally, you're going to look at Adobe RGB. They're better for printing and can be converted to sRGB if needed, but they won't display correctly on the web without being converted in the first place. And you've got the working RGB right here, which is the sRGB I just referred to. You also have the option just to leave it at don't color manage. I'm going to go with Adobe RGB, and once we are satisfied with what we've created here, that is when you can hit create, and you've got your brand new document here. In our next lesson, we will move on to templates and creating some of our own presets. Thank you for watching.
