Hello, my name is Mike Collins. In this lesson, you'll learn about how to define and apply paragraph styles in Adobe InDesign. You can create a wide variety of paragraph and character are really just templates for your text in the document. You can create them ahead of time before you create or open a document and apply them also ahead of time. A quick way to create paragraph paragraph is to start with a text frame with some placeholder text. Let's open the application and create a new document. We'll go ahead and create a text frame, go up to type, and let's add some placeholder text. Now we can add whatever styles we want our document to have, like body text, headline text, captions, or whatever else you want. I usually begin with body text and modify the style of it until it eventually looks like what I want it to become. These style changes are a work in progress and may take a little time to get to the final version. Don't worry, though. You can modify and make changes any time you like as you move along the design process. To begin, let's select some text in the frame. Then we'll go to Window, Paragraph Styles. The two types of style sheets include paragraph styles and character styles, which we'll look at in more detail in the next lesson. For now, we'll focus on paragraph styles. There are already some style sheets created in this paragraph styles box, including headings, subhead, paragraph, list, ordered list, and so on. These style sheets are templates for text in your document. Double -click on any item and you'll get a menu full of options to modify whatever you like that will define all the items in that category. You can define the settings of any category for all your style sheets. All changes you make to the text are shown in the style settings. You can name this style. You can name this style to whatever you like and click OK. Now you have your newly named paragraph style. You can now select the text in your document and assign the new style to it by selecting the box. You can highlight the text in a different color with character discuss in more detail in the next lesson. Character styles sheets have a few less options, but still give you a wide variety of menu items to select from to define your character styles. Paragraph styles apply to the paragraphs in your documents. You can select any text, such as a heading or subheading, and the style will be applied to all items with that style in the paragraph. Character styles allow you to highlight and change any text within a paragraph. Defining these styles beforehand can save you a lot of time and keep the headings, subheadings, et cetera, in your paragraphs consistent, as is the same with the characters in the paragraphs. Where this is very useful is if you want to make a design paragraph that you want to be applied consistently throughout your document. It is very important that you define your paragraph styles early in the document creation, so when you begin to have many pages of text, you can easily and consistently modify and apply changes across your entire document. If you select Preview in the lower left corner of the panel, you will see the actual changes being made to your document in real time. Paragraph styles in Adobe InDesign can also automatically create a table of contents, which will give you a link you can click on to go to that particular section.
