Creativity is a critical leadership skill to avoid stagnation. Even huge companies such as Blockbuster and Kodak have fallen apart because of their lack of imagination. Creativity causes a disruption in societal norms and it takes guts to break free from what is seen as business as usual. Once done correctly, companies excel. Companies like Amazon, Netflix, Disney, and Facebook are ahead of the game, and their creativity is what drives them. Good leaders are always on the lookout for ways to be creative. For instance, a study by Victor Seidel of the University of Oxford Said Business School found the use of coordination totems helped with the creation of new products. Coordination totems are prototypes, metaphors, analogies, and stories used to organize and direct one's thinking. Victor Seidel's analysis proved that development teams that use coordination totems were more successful. How else can you boost your creativity? First, accept that you are creative. We all have unlimited potential and our job is to find our niche— looking at things from multiple angles and other perspectives. Invite your family and friends to share their perceptions and you may see something you never saw before. Seek out new experiences and step outside your comfort zone. Visiting a new place and seeing new people and sights opens your mind. Try simple steps first. Engage in observational sessions. Socialize outside of your normal circles. Read books. Keep a journal. Meditate or take a painting, writing, or music class. One way you can boost the imagination is to embrace imagination exercises. Let's look at two methods. The pick-a-word method— Pick any word and relate your creative problem or challenge to the word. Cross fertilization method— Listen to someone in an industry that has absolutely nothing to do with yours. Above all, keep it simple. Remember, solitude may be the best imagination generator we have. Planning too much allows the competition to jump ahead of you. Sometimes, choosing creativity over perfection requires trust and a calculated risk. Mistakes may happen and it is a learning experience. Just keep moving forward and let the imagination flow.
