In this FMCSA (Subpart I) Cargo Securement Standards course, you’ll understand how federal cargo securement rules apply to commercial vehicle operations. We’ll also cover performance-based requirements and working load limit calculations. This focus supports safe transport and consistent compliance during inspections. With that foundation in place, we’ll then move from regulatory understanding into practical application across real operating conditions.
We’ll examine cargo securement practices, presenting inspection steps and calculation examples. You’ll develop the ability to evaluate securement strength and strengthen decision-making during loading and transit. We’ll also address commodity-specific standards, inspection responsibilities, and documentation processes to give you a complete understanding of FMCSA cargo securement compliance. By the end of this course, you’ll apply Subpart I requirements to verify that cargo remains secured during normal driving conditions.
Learning Objectives:
• Apply Subpart I rules to verify cargo remains secured
• Calculate tiedown quantity and aggregate working load limits
• Evaluate securement systems against FMCSA performance force requirements
• Inspect securement equipment and anchor points for compliance
• Identify when commodity-specific securement standards apply
It is designed for people involved in commercial vehicle operations who need to understand and apply FMCSA Subpart I cargo securement rules, including those responsible for loading, transit decisions, and inspections.
It covers federal cargo securement rules for commercial vehicles, performance-based requirements, working load limit and tiedown calculations, securement systems for different freight types, cargo placement and support, mixed and irregular loads, commodity-specific standards, securement responsibilities by role, inspections before and during transport, equipment inspection and replacement, and documenting corrections and compliance.
You will build skills in equipment inspection, regulatory compliance, and structural calculations — including calculating tiedown quantities and aggregate working load limits and evaluating securement systems against FMCSA performance force requirements.
The course moves from regulatory understanding into practical application, with lessons on rules, securement devices, calculations, freight-type systems, inspections, and documentation, each followed by Test Your Knowledge checks.
