In this Bloodborne Pathogens in Construction Environments course, you'll learn how bloodborne pathogens spread on job sites and the diseases they cause. We'll also cover exposure control plans and safe work practices. These practices are critical for protecting yourself from infection when you come into contact with blood or other bodily fluids at work. Building on these basics, we'll explore the protections and procedures that keep you safe throughout your workday.
We'll examine how HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C affect the body, detailing how each one spreads and the treatments available. You'll gain the ability to recognize biohazard labeling and apply housekeeping and handwashing practices that limit contact with infectious materials. We'll also address hepatitis B vaccination, accidental exposure response, and post-exposure procedures to give you a complete understanding of bloodborne pathogen safety. By the end of this course, you'll know how to reduce your exposure risk and respond correctly to an accidental exposure.
Learning Objectives:
• Identify common bloodborne pathogens and their health risks
• Describe how bloodborne pathogens spread on job sites
• Explain the purpose of an exposure control plan
• Apply safe work practices to reduce exposure risk
• Demonstrate correct steps after an accidental exposure
It is designed for people working in construction environments who may come into contact with blood or other bodily fluids on the job and need to protect themselves from infection.
It covers how bloodborne pathogens spread on job sites and the diseases they cause; how HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C affect the body, spread, and are treated; exposure control plans and biohazard labeling; safe work practices, housekeeping, and handwashing; hepatitis B vaccination; and accidental exposure response and post-exposure procedures.
You will build skills in emergency response, bloodborne pathogens safety, and disease prevention — including recognizing biohazard labeling, applying practices that limit contact with infectious materials, and responding correctly to an accidental exposure.
The course moves through lessons on bloodborne pathogens in construction environments; HIV, hepatitis and sources of infection; the exposure control plan and labeling; reducing exposure through safe work practices and housekeeping; vaccination; accidental exposure; and a review.
