In this Defensive Driving and Safe Operating Practices for Commercial Drivers course, you’ll understand how professional drivers maintain safe vehicle operation through situational awareness and defensive driving. We’ll examine space management and speed control for large commercial vehicles. These practices support safer vehicle handling in changing roadway environments. To build these skills, the course explains how drivers observe traffic conditions, manage vehicle spacing, and adjust driving behavior across different roadway situations.
We’ll explore defensive driving techniques, presenting practical examples of hazard detection and safe vehicle spacing. You’ll develop stronger traffic awareness and maintain better vehicle control during changing driving conditions. We’ll also cover distracted driving risks, braking and stopping distance, and driving in severe weather or low-visibility conditions to give you a complete understanding of safe commercial vehicle operation. By the end, you’ll recognize roadway hazards and apply driving decisions that support safe vehicle control.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand situational awareness and visual scanning in commercial vehicle operation
• Recognize roadway hazards and changing traffic conditions during commercial driving
• Apply safe following distance and space management while operating large trucks
• Explain how speed, braking, and cargo weight affect stopping distance
• Identify safe driving adjustments for severe weather and low-visibility conditions
It is designed for commercial drivers and professional drivers who operate large commercial vehicles such as large trucks.
It covers situational awareness and visual scanning, hazard detection, driver distraction and in-cab technology, safe following distance and vehicle spacing, speed adjustment, braking and stopping distance, managing speed on curves and grades, signaling practices, and driving in severe weather, low visibility, and at night.
You will build skills in defensive driving, hazard identification, and motor vehicle operation, including stronger traffic awareness and better vehicle control during changing driving conditions.
The course is organized into short lessons — from an introduction through visual scanning, distraction, spacing, speed and braking, and environmental hazards — with several "Test Your Knowledge" checks placed throughout.
By the end, you will be able to recognize roadway hazards and apply driving decisions that support safe vehicle control.
