Hello, my name is Mike Collins. In this lesson you will learn how to create, use, and edit a parent or master page in Adobe InDesign. Let's open the InDesign application and learn what a parent or master page is. We will create a new print document by clicking on New File, select Print at the top menu, go into Units, and select Inches, and then let's make sure our document is 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches in height. Now since we're looking at a multi-page document like a magazine or a newsletter, we're going to go ahead and select 10 pages, and we'll select Facing Pages, so it has left and right side pages like a book or magazine. By default, the Facing Pages button is selected, but we need to make sure it is. We'll go ahead and start it at page 1, and for now we won't worry about a primary text frame. We won't worry about how many columns it has, so you can change this to whatever number you like. We'll leave the column gutter as it is, which is a type setting term that refers to the space between two columns, which is why it's the right side of columns, in a page layout, and we have Margins options, which we'll leave those as is for now. Now that we can see everything is what we want, we'll go ahead and create the document. Let's zoom out so we can see it a little bit easier. Now let's look at the top of the display, and we can see a variety of top menu options. Start off with InDesign, which has several different options to choose from, and the one I use most often, and when not closing the program, is Preferences, which gives me many options to select, to change settings, File, Edit, Layout, Type, Object, Table View, Plugins, Window, which you'll use quite often, and Help. If we wanted to change what is displayed here in the workspace at the top of our screen, we could select Windows, at the top menu, and select Workspace, and choose whatever option we want, and the one I generally use that has most tools that I need is Essentials Classic. You can also access this menu on the right in this box here, which is the same exact settings, and again, for now we'll use Essentials Classic. The other option I'll use from time to time is Book, when we're doing a lot of type changes, but for now let's leave it at Essentials Classic. Since this lesson is on learning how to create, use, and edit parent pages, we will need to have the Pages menu open on the right side of your workspace, and you can see it's here. If it's not open again, go to Windows and select Pages, which is here, but since it's already up there, we'll go ahead and open this, and we can see now we have 10 pages in 6 spreads, and we can always click it and open it more if we want to see all the pages. Adobe InDesign changed the name of Master Pages to Parent Pages, so from now on we'll just call them Parent Pages as called here by A Parent. Let's take a minute and discuss what a parent page is. It is a non-printed, unpublished page that can be used as a document template, objects including text, graphics, headers, footers, and page numbers that are placed on it will automatically be applied and appear on all pages of your document or publication that are based on that master page. This is very useful for creating consistent elements such as logos or placeholder text or graphic frames. Your Adobe InDesign document can have as many parent pages, with as many different features as you like at the moment we just have one, and you can modify a parent page at any time and the new changes will automatically be applied to all pages in your document that you selected to be affected by that parent page. As you can see all of these pages, the ten pages in our six spreads here have the letter A on them. This goes back to the A Parent page and has all of the selected properties that are in this page. So whenever the parent is selected and applied, all of these pages will be affected by it. If we wanted to remove or isolate a page so it didn't, there are several options to do this. One, you can choose the None page which has no characteristics applied to it and you could literally just take this page and drag it down to a page and now you can see this particular page page number three on the right hand side of the facing page no longer has the properties of the A parent applied to it. So as I said, your Adobe InDesign document can have as many parent pages with as many different features as you like and you can modify it at any time and the changes will be applied or removed from all the pages in your document that you select to be affected or removed from that parent page. Also take note that an InDesign spread has a pace board around the outside of the page where you can store objects that aren't yet positioned on the page and it provides a space for objects that bleed or extend beyond the edge of a page. So let's take a look at the page menu of the properties panel and you'll see the single master page called A parent which was previously called A Masters. If you go to previous versions of InDesign you'll see it called a master page and not a parent page and the two pages that we've created in the document on each side left and right. So as you can see we have four different spreads that have a multi-spread or a facing pages on it and then one independent page which would be a title or front cover in the bottom which number 10 which would be the back of the booklet or magazine. And we talked about the single page above the A parent called none which is empty and has no attributes assigned to it. Now we created our document with 10 pages and we can modify this as we need to and there's a couple ways to do it. First of all let's start off with page number three, let's right click onto it and you can see several options here. We can insert more pages and we can put in half of them anyway like let's just choose two for now and we have the options after a certain page before a page at the start of the document or at the end of the document. Let's say after a page and let's say it's after page five, this gives us the properties of whether it's going to have the A parent page applied to it or none, we'll leave the A parent for now and click okay and now you can see we have another two more pages added to the document go out of that go back to where we were and move the page so we can see it actually let's select page number two double click on it and move over so we can see it go back to our pages menu here. Now we can see a couple of other options here if we wanted to add pages we can also go down here to this box with a plus sign on it called create new page and if we select on that we can add as many pages as we like as you can see and then you can always move the box down so you can see what we created but again let's go back to where we were with ten pages and six spreads center this now we can always go up to view if we want to center and fit the spread in the window I'm going to zoom out a little bit so we can see it a little bit easier here okay and you can always modify your pages so you can see things better you can move your panels around on the screen as you need to to open a parent page double click on either the left or right side we'll choose the right side let's say page number five and it will open that in your document and in your workspace. Now let's see on object created on a parent page will appear and be applied to all pages based on it let's create a text or graphics box on one side of the document and change its color and we can actually do this whether we want to do it on the parent page or on the document itself let's go to the parent page choose the right one now the pages open and we'll create a graphic let's go up here and create a square we'll put it where we want in our document we can change the color let's choose cyan for now and go back to our pages and now you can see that every page on the right hand side has the same graphic that was created in the a parent page on the right hand side thanks for watching
