Nearly half of these workers reported that a colleague caused the infection. Furthermore, 53 percent of workers said they do not usually get a flu shot.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the workers who contracted influenza, employees took an average number of 2.7 days to fight the infection. However, you can still pass along the virus for up to a week after you get sick.<\/p>\n<p>Also, 53 percent of employees who became sick reported that they went back to work before they actually felt better. This significantly increases the odds of spreading the virus to others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does the flu hit work so hard every year?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Workers reported that they primarily went to work while sick due to deadlines, pressure from colleagues and wanting to avoid using sick days.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, 24 percent of employees claimed their boss expects them to come into work regardless of health concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, influenza impacts businesses in numerous detrimental ways, including lost productivity, lower worker morale and bad workflow.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the 1,500 workers Staples surveyed, more than half indicated that the flu is more harmful to the workplace than having no email or even losing Internet altogether.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are the most germs at work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cold-and-flu\/ss\/slideshow-germs-office\">more likely<\/a> to get sick from the office with break rooms carrying the bulk of the germs, bacteria and viruses.<\/p>\n<p>In general, the most regularly sanitized objects at work are desks and computer keyboards. However, only 9 percent of workers regularly sanitize their phones, which have 10 times more bacteria than most toilet seats. Despite this, we handle them constantly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To avoid falling victim to the flu season this year, Staples indicates that people should stay home when they get sick and encourage others to remain home when they are sick.
