The best leaders know their message must work on two levels. It needs to be understood and touch listeners emotionally.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first steps in learning how to communicate well is learning how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/active-listening-skills-with-examples-2059684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">actively listen<\/a>. This skill enables leaders to assess the climate in the room and adjust their message accordingly. Remember, it is not about you. It&#8217;s about who\u00a0is listening to what you have to say and how it impacts them. Stephen Covey said it best: <em>\u201cSeek first to understand, and then be understood.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikemyatt\/2012\/04\/04\/10-communication-secrets-of-great-leaders\/#486029d422fe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forbes<\/a><\/em> outlines 10 principles to follow to ensure great interpersonal communication for leaders:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Build trust<\/strong> \u2013 You can\u2019t demand trust. You have to earn it by exhibiting the right behaviors, thoughts, and making good decisions consistently.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relationship building<\/strong> \u2013Talk to people and let them know you care about them and their jobs. Learn to understand their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/20140925170603-27733619-interpersonal-communication-keys-to-effective-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">behavioral styles.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be specific<\/strong> \u2013 Be simple and concise when communicating. If someone is nodding with arms tightly crossed, you will get a mixed message. Facial expressions, gestures, and body movements convey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesize.com\/en\/video-conferencing-blog\/speaking-without-words#:~:text=These%20studies%20led%20Dr.,is%20%E2%80%9Cnonverbal%E2%80%9D%20in%20nature.\">70 to 93 percent of our message<\/a>. Appreciation keeps people motivated and productive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use positive body language<\/strong> by looking your best, practicing welcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisebread.com\/you-are-what-you-do-16-ways-to-improve-your-body-language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">body language techniques<\/a>, and smiling during interactions with others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promote a positive work environment<\/strong> by keeping in touch with employees, offering assistance when appropriate, and using empathy to understand various situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccl.org\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/communication-1-idea-3-facts-5-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Honing<\/a> interpersonal skills\u00a0is essential for any leader, or anyone who aspires to be in a leadership position.
