You may notice conflict arising in the form of anger, harsh words and insults, lack of cooperation, etc. Left unchecked, this can create a toxic work environment that will diminish productivity not only for those involved in the conflict but for everyone around them, as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With conflict comes the need for workplace <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/cr\/reports-and-resources\/eeo-mediation-guide\/what-mediation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mediation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a means of resolving disputes, settling contracts, etc. Mediation involves a third party who can assist in creating a neutral environment in which the affected individuals can explore solutions together. The mediator remains objective and neutral and can help the affected individuals keep the conversation tame and solutions oriented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When HR Should Manage Conflict in the Workplace<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, employees and their managers can work out conflict amongst themselves without ever needing explicit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/when-should-hr-step-in-for-conflict-resolution\/621545\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help from HR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, some situations require an HR presence:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistent failure to get along \u2013 if employees are continuing to run into the same issues with each other repeatedly, seeking support from their manager probably isn\u2019t helping to permanently resolve the conflict. Connecting with HR will provide stronger support.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tension and competition \u2013 if there is an interpersonal conflict at work with an employee that management openly favors, the other individual(s) might feel defensive and insecure, preventing them from opening up. Furthermore, management might not be neutral in helping to resolve issues if this is, indeed, the case.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring workplace support \u2013 it\u2019s quite common for an employee to not feel support by their manager. When it\u2019s too sensitive or challenging to address a manager directly, HR can step in to help mediate conversations about solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A neutral and unbiased voice is needed \u2013 regardless of the situation, sometimes a neutral third party is just helpful to have around. This is a great way to connect with others and help enhance empathy. Active listening means listening to understand, not to respond.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesbusinesscouncil\/2020\/02\/25\/the-power-of-body-language-in-the-workplace\/?sh=5d43f97f418e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body language<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 you can use your body language to build rapport, as well. Using non-threatening eye contact and maintaining an open posture will help others perceive you as trustworthy.
